The role of GEMDOS in the TOS

GEMDOS is built on top of BIOS and XBIOS.

GEMDOS provides functions that abstract access to:

• The filesystem (create and access files, directories, etc).
• The built-in VT52 console
• Memory and process management
• Time/date, and other system functionalities.

History of GEMDOS

GEMDOS was designed to be faster than CP/M-68k, which was an early option by the time Atari was looking for an underlying operating system for the GEM. Looking for speed, GEMDOS was inspired by MS-DOS (interwiki) which had proved its ability to handle floppy disk quite fast.
