ROM Cartridges Overview
All Atari computers support an external 128 kB ROM cartridge port. Cartridges may be created to support applications or diagnostic tools. The 128kB of address space allocated to cartridges appears from address
0x00FA0000 to
0x00FBFFFF (as specified in the
AtariHardwareMap).
Newer Atari computers support larger cartridges (this is because the address space would no longer overlap the OS) --
StabyloRmv note: [
San95] seems to be mixing up the ROM for TOS and the cartridge ROM ; newer Atari computers indeed have larger ROM for their OS, but same cartridges specifications as older ones.
When application cartridges are present,
GEMDOS will allow a special
'c' (lowercase) drive to be accessed. Executable files may appear on this drive as they would on any standard disk. This special drive may also be installed on the desktop.
